Overview
It is no longer enough for the HR professional to focus merely on the traditional transactional and administrative aspects of managing a workforce. HR must remain ahead of the game in order to assist the organization’s growth, using its most important asset—its people. Talent management systems(TMS) of today are a broad based tool that assist not only in one or two aspects, but many including: performance management, goal management, compensation management, talent acquisition/recruiting, learning management systems, career development and succession planning.
The talent management system is ahead of the ATS or the Applicant Tracking System which only addresses the recruitment needs of an organization. TMS bundles many areas of organizational requirement and may include ATS within its domain. The role of good human resource management in an organization’s success is indisputable, but its effectiveness is further contingent upon the way it leverages the talent.
TMS provides end-to-end solutions where the entire cycle of the employees’ engagement with an organization—from recruitment to retirement—can be effectively managed. TMS can be utilized to align competencies of the employees with the organization’s long term goals. The tedious processes of yesterday become automated and managers have tangible facts and figures in front of them, better aiding decision making with respect to human capital.
Benefits of Talent Management Systems
A good talent management system is vastly helpful in aiding productivity, as the administrative workload decreases significantly. This streamlining of processes is accompanied by reduced labor costs and increased profit margins. It brings with it the advantage of melting geographical handicaps. The employees of an organization can access workforce related information regardless of time or location. Intelligent TMS is able to process workforce data and come up with a wide array of benefit options for the employees without impacting the organization financially in a major way. Mundane tasks like finishing payroll, which were time consuming and carried the possibility of costly errors, are ruled out. Automation ensures accuracy and exactness.
Talent Management Systems and HR Planning
Talent management systems have a crucial place in strategic human resource planning and the demand for such applications has been on the rise. Consequently, there have been innovations and more vendors have entered the market through the Software as a Service (SaaS) route, bringing down the costs in a big way and providing a viable option for the small and medium businesses to harness the potential of talent management.
For any organization, it is of primary importance to select a TMS with great care as this decision will affect its performance and its chances of achieving its long term objectives. The selection must be preceded by proper need assessment and a talent management strategy must be in place. The scalability to future growth and flexibility to deal with issues relating to language, legal twists, both cultural and technological, should be looked into before taking on the services. The big fish in the markets are also buying out the smaller players, and are offering a complete suite of solutions. In light of this development, cost should become secondary to the question “will the vendor be still around after a couple of years?”
