Job Type (or Job Code) Census metrics report the number of employees by position, area of expertise, or skill-set. A sample Job Code Census may report how many engineers are employed by the organization by listing engineers who work in Product Development, as well as those who may work for IT and in other divisions.

Job Type reporting adds an important dimension to headcount reports. Like headcount reports, a Job Type Census can display the number of people in each department, but in addition to this, it specifically categorizes employees based on their skill set, heedless of what department they work for. Job Type Census can be analyzed to see if economies of scale could be improved from centralizing certain functions, or distributing them to separate divisions. Corporation heads can easily identify every person in their organization with a certain skill set, a valuable tool when succession planning or for reorganizations.

Job Type Census can be reported by division, regionally, or globally. Global reporting will provide holistic information about the company. However, depending on how the company is structured, it may not be immediately usable depending on the distribution of function between remote locations and headquarters. Regional reporting may be immediately actionable, because it is often easier to merge or split functions if employees do not need to be relocated. If an organization relies exclusively on regional reports, some redundant positions may remain in remote offices, but either are either are possibilities with an org chart.

Job Type Census is useful to report data by Division, as it is often easier to analyze and action change separately in each division, avoiding confusion. Reporting Census information by Division also allows cross-division and industry peer comparisons.

By using organizational charting software, divisions can quickly be isolated for examination. One can also compare and contrast job type census across divisions by publishing charts in power point presentations.
